Questions concerning life and man's relationship to God are nothing new to modern
times, as evidenced by these timeless thoughts from 1000 B.C., 700 B.C. and the first
century A.D.
The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." (Psalms 14:1) Lift your
eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? (Isaiah 40:26) |

|
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. (Psalms 19:1-3)

Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In
them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never
understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving." For this people's
heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their
eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with
their hearts and turn, and I would heal them. (Matthew 13:13-15)

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the LORD. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher
than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from
heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out
from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and
achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:8-11)

What may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and
divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that
men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor
gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were
darkened. (Romans 1:19-22)

Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of
this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. For the
wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the
wise in their craftiness"; and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the
wise are futile." (1 Corinthians 3:18-20) For the foolishness of God is wiser than
man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. (1 Corinthians
1:25)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and
discipline. (Proverbs 1:7)
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. (Matthew 22:37-38)
